Event Description

Identify the Symptoms to Determine if Chemical Impairment Should be the Focus of Your Investigations

Accidents and injury-related incidents are a commonplace occurrence in the trucking industry. The Federal Highway Administration reported that over 140 billion miles are driven by OTR trucking operators every year.    In 2015, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recorded 4,311 fatal accidents involving large trucks or buses resulting in 716 occupant fatalities (total fatalities equaled 4,377). Even for the cases where no one was injured or killed, the FMCSA recorded 395,000 traffic crashes in 2015. You must understand how to conduct proper investigations for drug use in the trucking industry, especially since the number of CMV related traffic incidents is at a staggering high.

Join this session with expert speaker Mark Ashby who will introduce you to the procedures you can take to properly investigate the incidents relating to drug and/or alcohol impairment with an emphasis on the trucking industry. You will learn how to detect impairment related behaviors prior to an incident. This session will provide detailed information on what a safety investigator should look for while investigating a work type incident. You will learn what behaviors, observations and personal habits are associated with chemical use. Mark will also discuss pre-incident behaviors, observations and personal changes. You will learn how to analyze the incident to determine what type of impairment may have been present. Mark will look into incident investigation including: the type of incident, the extent of injury or damage and the lack of use of safety measures. Under post-incident, Mark will focus on detecting chemical impairment. You will also understand the reaction section which will cover documentation and testing. Mark will also discuss safety measure compliance, as well as documentation and testing. You will learn about the signs and/or symptoms that can help you determine if chemical impairment should be a focus of your investigations.
