Understand How the Finalized FSMA Rule Will Impact Your Transportation & Logistics Activities

The Food Safety Modernization Act (FMSA) is the biggest regulatory overhaul in the history of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is a paradigm shift where the attention is shifted towards preventive measures and process compliance from food inspections. The FSMA impacts distributors, logistics and transportation companies which transport food, retailers and food producers.

FSMA Final Rule on Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food, which has been finalized recently, is one of the most crucial part of the FSMA. Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food rule is one of the seven foundational rules that were introduced since 2013 to make a risk-based, modern framework concerning food safety.  The rule is built on safeguards visualized in the 2005 Sanitary Food Transportation Act (SFTA).

The companies which process, grow, sell and distribute food has to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Therefore, supply chains are also required to meet the act. Some other important elements of the food supply chain which is required to comply with FSMA laws are third party logistics providers, logistics companies and transportation companies.
