Dr. Vanderburgh has held several different roles over the last nine years that have been focused on enhancing student success at urban public universities. A former professor of Philosophy, Vanderburgh currently serves as Associate Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Studies at California State University, San Bernardino. His work on increasing college success has included enhancing new student orientations, creating first year seminars, augmenting learning support programs, implementing initiatives to teach financial literacy for college success, mass-scale summer bridge programs and other degree-completion projects. In this work Vanderburgh takes a data- and research-driven approach that always includes fostering multi-unit collaborations to adapt best practices to local conditions. With special attention to resolving educational inequities and addressing social justice issues, his work (1) recognizes that students' success in college involves more than just academic factors and (2) aims to "scale up" interventions to meaningfully address the most pressing crises facing higher education today.
