Clifton McCann is a patent attorney and partner in Thompson Hine LLP's Intellectual Property group in Washington, D.C. He has a technical background in chemistry, biology, and physics and helps clients obtain, enforce, license, and defend patent rights, and defend against infringement claims made by others. He has obtained and defended patent rights in the chemical arts for thirty years and serves as co-chair of the firm's Water Technology, Finance, and Regulatory Group.
Clif's patents for chemical processes have withstood validity challenges in federal district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He has an undefeated record as first-chair trial and appellate counsel in chemical patent litigation, winning multimillion-dollar awards and settlements. His high-tech patent clients have included the National Institutes of Health and small to large U.S. corporations. He holds a masters (LL.M.) in patent law from George Washington University, has chaired local and national patent law groups, and speaks on patent law issues.
