Safety and Security in the 21st Century Workplace: Preparedness, Identification, Risk Mitigation and Prevention.

You live in a country that allows concealed carry, where petty criminals, psychopaths and what not roam around freely in the streets – certainly, you can’t deny the importance of having the knowledge of identifying a catastrophe/crisis situation and know what to do when they arise.

There might be a terrorist walking beside you, and you won’t know about it! It is thus of paramount importance, that your company has a plan that will minimize the possibility of a catastrophe. As employees, it is imperative to know how to spot a danger – be it on fellow employees, or ourselves. There are also ‘different’ people in this society, who are being treated with a mental condition, in the workplace. If you’re called to manage a crisis situation involving such a person, you have to handle it with skill and knowledge, or else it will not just cost you fixtures and injuries, but dollars and a bad name in the community for perceived negligence.

In a report released in 2016 February, the Violence Policy Center documented 722 deaths caused due to shootings since May 2007—caused by private citizens having license to carry concealed weapons. The killings in every case documented that none of them was done due to self-defense! Due to no systematic gathering of data on such incidents, the information had to be gleaned by the center from news reports and death notes of the victims, which are only an unknown fraction of the unreported number of similar incidents that routinely occur across the nation.
