Techniques to Achieve Contractor Safety Assurance

Selecting the right contractor can mean the difference between project success and failure on many levels. The wrong choice can easily end up costing a lot of money, wasted time, frustrated people, lawsuits, bad publicity, insurance claims, etc. The number of ways a bad contractor can hurt you is indeed a very long list. Then there are accidents which can attract personal injury lawyers. They really do not care if your company has a halo over its name and reputation. All they know is that the ambulance brought a person to the hospital, and it’s their job to make you pay some astronomical amount for the ‘pain and suffering’, real or imagined, associated with an incident.

In other words, you as a business owner or general contractor need to take every ‘reasonable’ precaution to control who is allowed to come on the job site. This presentation by expert speaker John J. Meola, CSP, ARM, will explore industry-proven techniques to help you avoid stepping on land mines or falling into quicksand during the low-bid contracting process. It will cover in detail where to start this process and how deep to drill into the details for assurance of a contractor’s capability and will be oriented towards entry-level and intermediate grade complexity.

John will also discuss defensive investigatory concepts not normally found in the safety rulebook, intended to provide your company with the all-important knowledge that you are making the right selection when it comes to contractors.

Session Highlights

  • Interpret a contractors Workers Compensation Experience Modification Factor (EMF) or MOD, which is one of several key indicators of a contractors safety performance

  • Use of third-party screening agencies, who are the hired guns for the big guys, to do the sifting and winnowing of contractors. Their questions are mind-boggling but you need to have an answer for them.
