Event Description

Federal Law Provides Family Status Protections You Must Heed

Planned communities (including condos, coops, manufactured home parks, and subdivisions with homeowners associations) must allow families with children according to federal law. This is, unless your property falls into a very narrow exception. If your policies aren’t aligned with family status rules, expect liability that can cost community managers, board members, and each and every homeowner—big time.

Join housing pro Jo Becker in this webinar to learn how to assure your community is in compliance with familial status protections. Becker will discuss the details of federal familial status protection, including the correctness (or not) of: admission policies based on age, community rules that target kids under 18, and restrictive occupancy policies.

After attending this webinar, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of the federal Fair Housing Act and its familial status protections. You’ll also know which common violations to avoid—that is, which rules and practices are most likely to land you in trouble. You should already know that “no kids,” “no teenagers,” and “no toddlers” policies will land you in legal jeopardy, but there’s so much more you should know about occupancy standards and community rules!

Cautionary tales, best practices, and case law relevant to homeowner associations (HOAs) and other planned communities will be included throughout.
