Passed in the year 1968, the Fair Housing Act promises to ensure equal housing opportunities for everyone. Forty five years later, we’re still working to achieve that goal. Two recent HUD studies showed that the subtle racial discrimination against the renters still persists—and that adverse treatment of homosexual renters is even more blatant. HUD is quite serious about fighting housing discrimination. So, don’t get caught in the cross hairs.
Is “Fair Housing” simply a set of laws? A behavior model that is intertwined with the fundamental American principles of freedom and opportunity? Or is it just plain good business?
The answer to the question: All of the above. That’s why, as a housing professional, your job and responsibility comes with a high bar for creating an “equal opportunity” business practices as well as the policies that comply with the Fair Housing Act.
