Consider yourself lucky if you haven’t, because almost 70% of renters in the United States have pets (mostly dogs and cats) – and there are over 1.5 million dog bites across the country annually. The majority of dog bites occur where the dogs reside, and over 16,000 are work related – something that should get the attention of maintenance crews and service techs everywhere. So whether it’s ordinary pets, service or assistance animals, maintaining on-the-job safety around residents’ animals is something you can’t afford to take lightly.

Knowing the fundamentals of animal body language will not only help you to minimize mishaps and maintain on-the-job safety, but also maximize customer service and resident retention. In this session, industry expert Jo Becker will show you how to achieve all these objectives – and more. Becker will walk you through the fundamentals of animal accommodations under the federal Fair Housing Act, and explain the difference between service and assistance animals. She will teach you how to read animal body language – including the key differences between predator and prey animals. She will also show you how to alter your own body language – such as by playing up or down predator and prey traits – to minimize the chances of attack.

After attending this session, you will be able to identify the key warning signs, alter your body language to deescalate or dominate a given situation, and confidently approach residents’ dogs, cats, and other critters. Plus, you’ll be able to enhance customer service by interacting more knowledgeably with residents and prospects accompanied by critters.
