Event Description

Use Short-run SPC to Minimize Inventory and Improve Customer Responsiveness

Traditional SPC (Statistical Process Control) relies on long production runs to acquire enough data to estimate the process parameters and set the control limits. But with consumer tastes changing so fast, traditional methods aren’t viable any more. Manufacturers are looking to replace them with small lot and mixed model production. Moreover, traditional control charts are not particularly suitable for tracking multiple characteristics on individual parts, or different part-types (with different specifications) made on the same machine. Short-run SPC, as described in the Automotive Industry Action Group's CQI-26 and also in Stephen Wise's and Douglas Fair's Innovative Control Charting (1998), is an off-the-shelf technique for addressing these situations – and you can benefit immensely from it.

Learn how to perform SPC for the kind of short run and small lot production applications that are not addressed by most SPC textbooks/software in this webinar by productivity wizard William A. Levinson. Levinson will show you what to do when (a) you need to control a process that has just started up, and about which you have no statistical information whatsoever, and (b) the objective is to perform SPC for multiple characteristics on the same part, or for mixed model production that involves parts with different specification limits.

The role of SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Dies) is well known for its enablement of the kind of small lot and mixed model production that avoids the generation of inventory, which in turn reduces cycle times and makes the factory more responsive to customer needs. Short run SPC supports short production runs and mixed model production, and also allows SPC for multiple part characteristics or parts with different specification limits. This makes it unnecessary to keep separate control charts for each characteristic and/or part.

After attending this webinar, you will be able to deploy SPC for (a) new process startups, where little or anything is known about the process mean and variation (b) small lot and mixed model production, and (c) multiple product characteristics, where SPC for the latter would otherwise require an excessive number of control charts for each operation.

Session Highlights

You will learn:

  • That textbook SPC, which involves charts for sample averages and sample variation for a single CTQ (Critical to Quality) characteristic, is not suitable for many real-world applications that involve short production runs, mixed model production, and control of multiple characteristics.
  • The concept of the DNOM (Deviation from Nominal) chart.
  • How to get a "good enough" starting estimate for the process variation by assuming a given process performance index (processes where Pp < 4/3, i.e. worse than 4-sigma processes, are not considered capable).
  • How to apply short run SPC to small lot production, where parts with different specifications are generated by the same process.
  • How to use standardized charts to address situations in which the characteristics to be tracked simultaneously do not have equal variances.
