Understand Cause and Solution Search Strategies for Root Cause Analysis and Problem Solving

For most problems there is a myriad of possible causes, and for each actual cause there is a range of potential solutions. While effectiveness of problem solving depends on the accuracy of evidence and the resulting decisions that are made, efficiency in finding the right causes and solutions is a different matter. Some of the more efficient methods can also provide greater accuracy since they don’t have to deal with as much noise.

This webinar with expert speaker Duke Okes is focused on ways to search for causes, which begins with a proper problem statement and quickly moves to strategies for using location, timing and system structure to zero in on the right areas. Options for searching for solutions are also discussed.

A key to more efficient problem solving is reducing the scope of searches for causes and solutions. However, rather than doing this arbitrarily it should be based on the concepts of system analysis. This webinar will provide several approaches for looking at a technical or business system that can more rapidly sort through the many factors in order to determine which are more relevant.

Session Highlights

  • What the problem statement provides as pointers to causes
  • Why a cause and effect (fishbone) diagram is not very efficient
  • How going up the problem hierarchy may be a better solution option
  • How different system perspectives can also yield better solutions
  • Six ways to search for location of causes in a process flow
  • How data patterns can point to and/or eliminate specific causes
  • Tools for single and multivariate pattern analysis
  • Six ways to break down the system structurally to find causes

Who should attend?

  • Anyone involved in conducting root cause analysis for quality and other product/service/process/performance issues
  • Managers of quality, IT services, environmental systems
  • Corrective action coordinators
  • Process engineers, process owners and Six Sigma professionals
