Using Accelerated Life Testing Methods to Overcome Challenges in Standard Reliability Testing

Most of the manufacturers recognize the importance and need of developing products that would perform reliably throughout a product’s lifecycle. Inferior reliability performance alienates customers and impairs brand and company reputation significantly. While product development actions, which ensure that the reliability targets are met, have substantially increased in recent years, several challenges that remain include:

  • Short product development timeframes;
  • Small sample sizes available for reliability testing; and
  • Difficulty in observing product failures (required for reliability estimation) in available testing timeframe.

Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) methods may be utilized to overcome many of the challenges in standard reliability testing. Quantitative Accelerated Life Testing involves identifying stress conditions that will accelerate the failure mode(s) so that failures may be observed in a shorter time period.  Failures observed at various stress conditions may be modeled and performance at normal use (or environmental) conditions may be predicted with ALT. 

This session, by expert speaker Steven Wachs, will focus on Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) methods to overcome many challenges in standard reliability testing. You’ll get a understanding of and strategies for estimating reliability performance using accelerated life testing.
