Simplifying Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (R&R) in Measurement System Analysis

Under ISO 9001:2008, Gage calibration is a mandatory and familiar activity which is there to ensure that gage returns the dimensions of standards used to calibrate it on an average. Measurement System Analysis (MSA) is a complementary activity assessing the ability of the gage and inspector in getting consistent measurements.

ISO 9001:2008 doesn’t explicitly require this, however, this webinar by expert speaker William A. Levinson will explain why it is very important, nonetheless.

Though gage is calibrated, the variation in measurement system can affect the outgoing quality, power of statistical process control (SPC) charts in detecting process changes, or the estimate of process capability. However, MSA is quite a straightforward procedure and the generally accepted practices for this are widely available. A highly authoritative manual is offered by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), and StatGraphics, Minitab and similar other software packages also perform the calculations.

Session Highlights:

  • Understand the difference between a calibrated (accurate) gage, and a capable (precise) gage.
  • Know the components of gage capability including repeatability and reproducibility.
  • How repeatability measures the ability of an inspector to get consistent results from the gage, while reproducibility measures the dependence of the measurement on the inspector.
  • Understand other measurement system aspects such as linearity and bias.
  • Recognize the effect of measurement system variability on outgoing quality, statistical process control, and process capability analysis.
  • Measurement variation introduces the risk of rejecting borderline good product, and accepting borderline bad product.
  • Measurement variation reduces the power of SPC charts to detect any given process shift. It does not, however, increase the false alarm risk.
  • Measurement variation will result in pessimistic estimates of the process capability. If, however, the gage variation is known, it is possible to calculate the actual process capability.
  • Know the procedure for performing a reproducibility and repeatability (R&R) analysis.
  • Know potential remedies for non-capable gages, such as measurement replication to deal with poor repeatability

Additional Tools & Resources

  • The presentation will be made available as a .pdf document, with additional information and details for many of the slides.
  • A table of the d*2 factors (necessary for performance of the calculations in Excel) will be provided.
  • Procedures will be provided in the handout for performing R&R in Excel, Minitab, and StatGraphics.
  • Equations will be provided that show how to account for the effect of gage variation on process capability and SPC calculations.

Who Should Attend

  • Quality management professionals
  • Engineers, technicians, and inspectors
