Currently, the Family Medical Leave Act (1993) is the only federal regulation that requires employers to provide employees with leave for serious medical conditions. There are three states that have enacted laws that require employers to provide paid leave today; however, there still isn't a federal law that provides employees with paid leave. There is a huge push throughout the United States - at the state and local level especially - to require leave for employees when they are sick.
