High-Impact Practices to Bridge the Student Affairs/Academic Affairs Gap

Differing functions, values, cultures, and epistemologies have led to decades of disconnect between the areas of student affairs and academic affairs. In order to break historical barriers between academic affairs and student affairs and truly support student success, you must first eliminate the roadblocks and bureaucratic red tape that are inherently embedded in institutions of higher education.

In this session, expert speaker Paz Oliverez will demonstrate how one institution was able to establish a comprehensive First-Year Experience program to promote persistence, retention, and timely graduation for all incoming freshmen through a collaborative partnership between student affairs and academic affairs. You will be provided with an understanding of how the FYE program evolved over the past seven years, including specific details about how the collaborative efforts between student affairs and academic affairs changed during this timeframe. Paz will discuss both small-scale and large-scale efforts within and across divisions and how these efforts led to positive outcomes for some of the institution’s most at-risk student populations.

Paz will share insight related to the development and delivery of the numerous high-impact practices embedded in the First-Year Experience program, including proactive academic advising, peer mentoring, leadership development, campus engagement, summer bridge (including free summer courses for all incoming freshmen), freshman seminars, and much more. This session will include specific examples of tools and resources that can be utilized to provide students with information, support, and guidance to positively shape their academic performance and impart various forms of college knowledge. Based on her first-hand experience, Paz will provide insight into various factors related to program implementation from establishing collaborative relationships with institutional partners in academic departments to helping academically underprepared students develop the self-efficacy they need to persist through developmental and college-level coursework.

Paz will discuss program outcomes which will demonstrate the impact the aforementioned interventions have had on first-year students as they endeavor to make a successful transition from high school to college and persist through the freshman year and beyond.  In addition, by sharing methods of data collection and program assessment, Paz will show how early interventions have led to long-term student persistence and retention for some of the institution’s most academically underprepared students.

After attending this session, you will be better-equipped to establish cross-divisional partnerships between student affairs and academic affairs in their efforts to support student success. You will also gain a better understanding of high-impact practices that they can collaboratively implement on their own campus to ensure that students possess the necessary information, guidance, and support that will allow them to persist to graduation. Paz will discuss methods for assessing program outcomes to demonstrate the impact of these efforts. This session will conclude with Paz answering your specific questions.
