Learn Classroom-Based Strategies to Increase Student Engagement, Retention and Completion

Over the last 20 years, even as the number of Americans attending college has grown significantly, retention and completion rates have stagnated, especially with at-risk student populations—despite a plethora of “student services” based programs designed to address the problem.

As a result, we’re not seeing the numbers of people emerging from the other end of the pipeline with college degrees that we had hoped. And all of this is happening despite a revolving menu of retention initiatives on the student services side. Perhaps that’s because, as studies have shown, one of the main factors determining whether or not students persist is their experience in the classroom.

Join this session by expert speaker Rob Jenkins, where you will learn the characteristics of powerful teaching and its impact on retention. You will learn the fundamental conditions of learning and get specific strategies for keeping students engaged. Rob will discuss how to create a classroom environment that fosters persistence, how to practice unconditional positive regard and how to use positive reinforcement to achieve desired results.

Rob will provide specific classroom-based strategies that have proved to be effective in fostering student retention and completion. As you put the principles covered in this session into action, you will immediately see students start to become more engaged in class. A higher percentage will come to class prepared, participate in discussions, and complete their assignments. As a result, the percentage of students who successfully complete your course will increase. Over time, as more instructors apply these principles, the cumulative effect will be that more students will persist at the institution and complete their degrees and/or transfer requirements.
