This generation of veterans are killing themselves at a rate that is second only to the veterans from the First World War. The Greatest Generation veterans from WW II had the lowest suicide rate of all the wars from the Civil War to present, (a factor of 10 less than those from 30 years earlier) and the number one reason was the support that the campuses provided the veterans when they used the GI Bill. Our campuses need to know the role that they can play in keeping this Next Great Generation of veterans alive and thriving.
The challenge for many campuses is that they want to create a great campus veteran program, and when they try to start it, they don’t know how or where to find the veterans in their community. Many of them don’t know how many veterans are in their community so they don’t know what level of services they should provide. If a campus doesn’t know its market, then it is difficult to design the program.
This webinar by expert speaker Dr. John Schupp will provide you with methods to find the number of veterans in your community, from any age group, and most importantly, how to reach those veterans effectively. They are not high school seniors, so you can’t reach them by contacting their guidance counselors, and many of them are not employed yet, so it is difficult to reach them via employers in the region. In this session, you will be given specific and proven methods that have worked on many campuses nationwide.
This program will provide you an insight to the student veteran, BEFORE THEY ENLISTED. This is critical in understanding this demographic. A campus has to know the characteristics of the demographic before they can try to reach the demographic. And emails and flyers do not work for this demographic.
This program will provide you the breakdown of this demographic in terms of age, gender, race, marital status and educational level. Critical pieces of information for your campus to use when reaching this demographic. Dr. Schupp will provide you with the percentage of these student veterans that have issues with PTSD, depression, substance abuse disorder and suicide risk. This is a smaller percentage than many campuses realize because the media tends to showcase these issues. This webinar will provide another very important aspect and that is the percentage of veterans that are on prescription medication to help with some of their challenges they have upon returning to civilian life. This is critical when evaluating the performance of the student veteran in the classroom. And most importantly, this program will provide proven methods of recruiting that have worked on campuses of any size and in any location
