Event Description

Getting Students Access to Financial Aid Through FAFSA to Improve College Enrollment and Success

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 20 percent of all undergraduate students fail to fill out the financial aid application. According to the National College Access Network, students left more than $2.7 billion in aid on the table in 2014. While 20 percent may not seem like a huge number, the figure of $2.7 billion being left on the table illustrates the problems students face when it comes to understanding what they qualify for in terms of needed financial aid. Federal data suggests a widespread misconception: Among undergrads who didn’t seek aid, 44 percent said they thought they were ineligible for such support, making eligibility concerns the most common reason these students left unclaimed aid on the table. An unknown – but undoubtedly large – share of low-income students never enroll in college at all because they believe it is unaffordable.

The U.S. Department of Education tells us that 85 percent of four-year school students and 79 percent for two-year school students receive federal financial aid. Allowing those individuals, as well as those who didn’t understand the system, a way to provide financing for their education should be part of the agenda for every person associated with student success.

While there are different ways to address the needs of students requiring federal financial aid, the best strategy is that of understanding what tools are at one’s disposal. The new IRS data retrieval tool that allows for income information to be linked to a free application for federal student aid (FAFSA) form is one way that twenty-first-century educational technology is working with the twenty-first-century student. Data elements copied without modification from the federal income tax return filed with the IRS are not subject to verification. Because the use of the IRS data retrieval tool reduces the number of FAFSAs that must be verified by the school, some colleges and universities require their students to use the tool. The tool also makes applying for financial aid easier for the student and family, and reduces time and hassle.

This session with expert speaker Kent Seaver will provide education professionals an in-depth understanding of student needs so they can ultimately help their students achieve financial assistance and academic success. This session will look at the financial aid needs of students, and how FAFSA data and the IRS tool can improve student access to education. This session will provide the essential information that is necessary for students who come in the door empty handed to leave with a diploma in hand.
