Foster Inclusiveness, Combat Microaggression and Leverage the Differences and Strengths that Come from Diversity in Your Campus

Diversity in institutions is more prevalent than ever today. Diversity isn’t just limited to race and ethnicity, but also applies to other areas where people may be different such as age, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, and abilities. In our society, prejudice is pervasive in the form of discrimination, racism, sexism, homophobia and even ageism. On the other hand, to increase success and productivity, leveraging the differences, talents, strengths, and values of every member of our institutions is essential.

This session with expert speaker Dr. Peggy Mitchell Clarke emphasizes the importance of fostering inclusiveness in a diverse environment. You will gain insight into how values, perspectives, and behaviors may negatively impact interpersonal interactions and discover how cognitive biases and privilege undermine inclusiveness. Dr. Clarke will also examine microaggressions, the offensive hidden messages that people of color, marginalized groups and minority groups are subjected to, unconsciously and unintentionally. In addition, you will learn practical strategies for empowering, valuing, and engaging all members of your institution.
