Understand the Role of a Fall Bridge Program in Supporting College Students in Their First Year In College.

In these difficult economic times of budget cuts and limited resources, determining best practices for making the most of existing assets while continuing to serve students effectively is critical.  Diverse students experience a variety of challenges as they enter and move through higher education. As such, educational institutions must provide students with specific types of resources and support to ensure that they move into and through college successfully.  Ackerman (2006) demonstrated that bridge programs helped to ease students’ transition into college. 

Effective bridge programs infuse various elements to ensure that students make a real connection to the campus. These models incorporate the holistic approach with not only using academic advisors and peer mentors, but also include career exploration, study skills workshops and a host of other high impact practices (McCurrie, 2009). A Fall Bridge program like the one described in this webinar will take the discussion of bridge programs beyond the importance and impact of Summer Bridge and orientation programs. It will focus on the strategies and best practices that can be implemented to support students as they move through the first semester of college. This model includes proactive academic advising, peer mentoring, academic support, student success workshops, leadership development, campus engagement, and much more. 

Join expert speaker Dr. Paz Maya Oliverez in this session that includes specific examples of tools and resources that can be utilized to provide students with information, support, and guidance to positively shape their academic performance and impart various forms of college knowledge.  Based on first-hand experience as an advisor, program coordinator, and student affairs administrator, the presenter will provide insights into various factors related to program implementation from establishing collaborative relationships with institutional partners in academic departments to helping academically underprepared students develop the self-efficacy they need to persist through the first semester of college and beyond. Strategies for assessing program outcomes and leveraging data to secure institutional resources will also be discussed. 

A discussion of program outcomes will demonstrate the impact the aforementioned interventions have on students as they endeavor to make a successful transition from high school-to-college and persist through the freshman year and beyond.  In addition, by sharing these methods of data collection and program assessment, you will see how early interventions have led to long-term student persistence and retention for some of the most academically underprepared students.
