Using a Holistic, Intentional Approach to Career Development to Ensure That Students Are Well-Prepared For Career Success

Career readiness, an important issue in higher education, the labor market, and in the public arena, is defined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as “the attainment and demonstration of requisite competencies that broadly prepare college graduates for a successful transition into the workplace.” Accordingly, they have identified 8 competencies that employers indicate are necessary for college graduates to be successfully prepared for the world of work.

In this session, expert speaker Paz Maya Oliverez will discuss strategies for supporting the development of these competencies in college students through co-curricular efforts. She will do so by utilizing a framework for student success that goes beyond completion of the college degree. In order for college graduates to be competitive in today’s job market, they must possess the requisite knowledge, experience, abilities, and skills to make a good impression during a job interview, secure the position, and successfully operate in their new role and professional environment. There are numerous co-curricular experiences that colleges can provide, such as internships, research experience, leadership opportunities, and on-campus employment, to ensure that students are well-prepared for whatever they choose to do after college. However, these efforts must be intentional, developmental, and collaborative in nature. This session will provide practical tools, strategies, and examples to guide your institution in making career development a central aspect of your students’ college experience.

The career competencies needed for college graduates to be competitive in today’s job market require them to attain and demonstrate a diverse range of knowledge, experiences, skills, and abilities. In this session, Paz will demonstrate that through a holistic approach to supporting student success, career development can be fully integrated into co-curricular efforts on any college campus to ensure student success in college and employability beyond degree completion.
