Is your school using the correct procedures to identify Students with Disabilities per Federal Law?

Public schools in the US are required under federal law to identify students having disabilities and provide them with specially designed instruction. However, there is considerable variation in practice and policy across State and Local Education Agencies while interpreting federal requirements, particularly for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), speech-language impairments, and reading difficulties. School leaders need to be well versed in education law in order to fulfill their obligation to students, provide efficient and effective assessments, and avoid costly law suits.

In this session, nationally renowned speaker Dr. Kathleen Whitmire, PhD will:

  1. Help attendees understand the identification process.
  2. List required and recommended components of the comprehensive evaluation.
  3. Provide a framework for special disability groups.
  4. Address efficient ways to incorporate student data into the evaluation.
  5. Provide guidance for the use of special education funds.
