There is increasing pressure on staff to improve and maintain the retention of students in the present financial environment. For those students who are already vulnerable, the pressure of studying can be too high and poor performance can put them at threat of withdrawing. Usually, these students depend too much on the administrators and the faculty staff for guidance and support and shows unhelpful thinking styles that only serve to aggravate their sense of perceived failure. This scenario is stressful for staff members and students alike; however, good management of a student’s negative thinking styles and poor coping skills within a progress review setting or 1-1 tutorial can result in a positive outcome.

In this session, expert speaker Nicola Wilson posits that the evidence based cognitive model created by Aaron Beck in the 1970s, which has since evolved into what is now known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT, offer tools and techniques that can be modified for use by lay people working within an education setting.

This Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Webinar will provide staff members with the basic knowledge of the Cognitive Behvioral Therapy (CBT) model, and teach you some basic tools and techniques which can be utilized with ease in a 1-1 session with a student to better the student’s resilience, attitude and thought process. Resources will be given in the form of templates and documents that, following use within a 1-1 session, the student can then use as an aide-memoir to assist her or himself to sustain academic rigor and resilience.
