Student Advising – Best Practices to Help Millennial Students Succeed in the Workforce

Enrollment of students aged 18 to 24 is expected to increase 10 percent between 2010 and 2021, and enrollment of 25- to 34-years-old students will increase 20 percent, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). Students fitting this specific age cohort, called “millennials”, have been growing at the collegiate level, but haven’t necessarily been engaged successfully at colleges. Research suggests that millennials learn and act differently from past student groups – their advising needs are also different from previous generations. 

Millennials, unlike previous generations, have grown up with technology at their fingertips in every possible way. That technological exposure brings with it an immediate need to express, and in turn, receive expression. Higher education has been slow at times to embrace what is needed to allow this generation to flourish academically and economically as they matriculate into the 21st century workforce. Their success is important to ensure that this country is ready for the advances and challenges that await it in the next 25 to 30 years. Advising millennials to avoid academic pitfalls like probation and expulsion should be at the core of any college. Advising this cohort on the ways to succeed in college will increase not only this cohort’s success, but also the success of your institution as it progresses into the next decade. The game has changed, and so have the players – so why continue to embrace outdated methods of advising and educational design?

The issue at hand, then, is how to advise millennials in higher education in a productive manner so that they succeed in their chosen academic and career goals. What methods can be used in college to create better-trained students and a millennial workforce acclimated for the opportunities of the 21st century? Clear paths and true ownership of the advising process is needed for these institutions to be able to meet the needs of today’s student. Retention and graduation are terms that are often uttered in higher education meetings, but words like “ownership” and “accountability” need to be uttered, and meant just as often – and this session will examine these in detail.

In this session, student retention expert, Kent Seaver will provide a clear and concrete understanding of the advising needs of the millennial. Seaver will discuss the growing numbers of millennials that have entered higher educational institutions with the intention of making a difference there, as well as in the American workforce. You will learn about the qualities that separate this cohort from previous groups – and the specific needs that must be taken into consideration by higher educational professionals as they advise and mentor this unique, value-laden cohort through matriculation and into the workforce.

Specifically, you will learn about the types and methods of feedback that will be most effective for these students, the use of technology-assisted delivery of instruction, and the different attitudes and experiences that accompany this ethnically diverse cohort of 21st century students. Seaver will give special attention to Guided Pathways and mentoring – and how these approaches work well with the needs of this specific group of students.

You will leave with a greater understanding of this cohort – their needs, strengths, and goals. Seaver will provide you with best practices for engaging this growing, and diverse, American cohort at the collegiate level.
