Support First Generation Students in Sailing Through College With an Effective Summer Bridge Program

“Summer bridge programs can benefit all students, but they are absolutely critical to the success and retention of first-generation college-goers”

First-generation college-goers face a variety of challenges as they enter higher education. Fact is, much of the existing research in this field indicates that students whose parents didn’t attend college are likely to be less academically prepared for college than their non-first-generation counterparts – when it comes applying for admission and financial assistance or acclimating themselves to college post enrollment.

Educational bodies, as such, need to provide students with specific resources and support them so that their transition in and through colleges are successful. Ackerman (2006) talked about summer bridge programs, and how these helped first generation, low-income students to sail through the college transition. Effective summer bridge programs ensure that students get to have a real connection with the campus. The summer bridge model uses a holistic approach involving not only peer mentors and academic advisors, but also career exploration, study skill workshops and other such high impact practices, as observed by McCurrie, 2009.

Summer bridge programs, like the one discussed in this session by expert speaker Dr. Paz Maya Oliverez can help in supplementing the existing institutional and programmatic efforts in supporting the first-gen students, and build relationships between student affairs divisions and academics, empowering students at the same time by developing their critical college knowledge. Developing critical college knowledge help students in ensuring their academic retention and success.
