Apply Intrusive (Proactive), Developmental and Appreciative Advising to make your Academic Advising Team the #1 Source of Student Success on your campus!

There is no magic bullet for student success and retention. Although policies and practices for student retention can help, real success in student retention is about building and strengthening advising relationships with each student. Many students and institutions define academic advising as course scheduling. Although important, it is not enough by itself, and academic advising must take on a broad, holistic view to be impactful. True success comes one student at a time. This process cannot be done to students, it must be done with students, students who are willing partners in the process. In this session, we will explore ways to blend multiple models into a single framework and will share examples to help you get started.

This session with expert speaker Joseph Murray will equip you, whether you are faculty or full time academic advisors and administrators, with tools to identify and blend the advising frameworks of Intrusive or Proactive, Developmental and Appreciative Advising. Joseph will explore how these models together support student success through academic advising. Best practices for each model will be highlighted through strategies and concrete examples. A brief overview of each will be covered with examples on how to utilize and implement the six (6) phases of the Appreciative Advising framework (DISARM, DISCOVER, DREAM, DESIGN, DELIVER, DON'T SETTLE) in some detail.

Students often do not feel their voices are heard during their collegiate experience and institutional barriers can become insurmountable for students. In this session, you will see how blending these tools to build a personal connection and structured support are vital for retaining students and have fun along the way! This session will be engaging, informative and fun and will contain information that can be immediately applied to your work with students.

Many of today's journals and publications promote a single type of advising model or strategy to solve your advising challenges. These three frameworks provide a set of unique tools that can be used together and applied to different students and different situations to strengthen advising effectiveness.
