The final ruling for crystalline silica exposure has been released by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The rule is expected to provide a net benefit of approximately $7.7 billion, annually through control of exposure and other provisions of the rule. Exposure to silica has been linked to lung cancer, silicosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and kidney disease in workers. The standard will regulate the Construction, General Industry, and Maritime sectors which have workers that drill, cut, crush, or grind material containing crystalline particulates.
