Event Description

OSHA Beryllium Standard Compliance – Prepare for Enforcement Date May 11, 2018

On Jan. 9, 2017, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued a final rule that amends its beryllium standards for the general, construction and shipyard industries. The rule became effective on May 20, 2017.

Because beryllium is light and strong, it's often used in manufacturing and construction projects. And yet it is toxic (even cancer causing) to humans – especially those who are exposed to it at work.

The final rule sets a new permissible exposure limit (PEL) and requires new provisions to protect workers, including exposure control measures, exposure assessments, respiratory protection, personal protective clothing and equipment, and new conventions for housekeeping, medical surveillance, hazard communication and recordkeeping.

The rule has encountered a lot of opposition and has been challenged in court. For this reason, OSHA has delayed enforcement of the general standard, and the PEL and the short-term exposure limit (STEL) in the construction and shipyard standards until May 11, 2018.

Join this session with EHS professional Joe Keenan, and learn what the new OSHA beryllium standard requirements are and what changes have been made from the previous beryllium standard. You will get answers to your site specific beryllium questions. Keenan will also address case scenarios.
