Event Description

Identify the Economic Opportunities in Recycled Plastics

Waste plastics are currently recycled at a low rate, especially in the United States. There are a number of waste streams that contain plastic, and it is technically possible to recycle plastics. There are some approaches to recovering plastics that could be economically successful. Technologies are available to recover much of the plastic that is currently sent to landfills, and there are technologies that can increase the value of plastics that have typically been exported to unreliable markets. There’s also the need to engage technologies that can be implemented to overcome some of the short-term difficulties arising from China’s ban on importation of scrap plastic.

Join this session with expert speaker Brian Riise who will show how recycling these materials can yield value. Brian will describe the commercially available equipment to recover, purify and compound the plastics into pellets suitable for injection molding or extrusion into new products. Brian will also discuss some limitations of existing technologies as well as some of the emerging technologies that may overcome some of these limitations. In addition to an overview of the process equipment involved, you will get the guidelines to select the most suitable sequence of processes to achieve high-quality products. The session will also mention some of the markets for recycled plastics and will discuss some of the requirements when selling into these markets. You will also learn some of the requirements for selling high value recycled plastics into injection molding or extrusion applications. Brian will also describe technologies that can be implemented to overcome some of the short-term difficulties arising from China’s ban on importation of scrap plastic.

After attending the seminar, you will have a deeper appreciation of plastic recycling technologies and how they are arranged to create higher value products. This will allow you to have more valuable discussions with the suppliers of plastic recycling equipment and providers of technological solutions for particular end-of-life plastic streams. You will also have a greater ability to investigate and understand the economic opportunities of recycling plastics.

Session Highlights

  • Discover the economic potential of recycling end-of-life plastics in the United States compared with landfilling or exporting these materials
  • Overview of many of the available technologies for recycling plastics
  • How to select current technologies to result in economically-interesting plastic recycling
  • Considerations for arranging process steps based on the feed material and requirements for optimal performance of each process step
  • Emerging technologies that have the potential to improve recovery and product quality
  • Technical and quality requirements for selling into premium markets
  • Processing plastics all the way to pellets which can provide the highest paying and most consistent markets for the products

Who Should Attend

  • Engineers and management at waste management and recycling companies
  • Government officials and NGOs involved in developing or advocating for policies for waste management
  • Investors interested in sustainable technologies and the circular economy
  • Technical and business development personnel at plastics producers or compounders who are interested in incorporating recycled plastics into their products
  • Suppliers of additives used by plastic recyclers
  • Current purchasers of recycled plastics who are interested in working with their suppliers to improve the quality of the plastic
  • Product designers and engineers interested in incorporating recycled plastics in their products
