A Practical Approach to Understanding Industrial Hygiene

Industrial hygiene (IH) is a complex science that is a career path in its own right akin to doctors, lawyers, and engineers with its own degree programs and accredited certifications. This can be a challenge for executive leadership attempting to manage this function which supports the organization’s overall mission.

Managers and supervisors are known to be most effective when they understand not just how the operational component of their organization functions, but also when they understand how support functions can aid the organization’s mission.

Join this session with expert speaker Jarred O’Dell, who will provide executive leaders and organizational managers an overview of the four functional areas of industrial hygiene as well as some insights for effectively managing an IH workgroup. You will gain a functional understanding of chemical hazards, physical hazards, biological hazards and ergonomic hazards. With the foundation of these four functional areas, the session will conclude by providing some practical techniques for incorporating industrial hygiene functions into work processes so that they support instead of hindering the organization’s mission.

Session Highlights

This session will present types of hazards associated with each category followed by mitigation techniques, including:

  • Chemical hazards, which will cover the “Routes of Exposure” concept
  • Types and examples of respiratory hazards
  • Physical hazards, which will cover the concepts of temperature, ionizing radiation, non-ionizing radiation, and noise with examples
  • Imaging technology of noise canceling devices
