Learn How to Maximize the Benefits and Minimize the Pitfalls of ISO/IEC 17025 Accreditation

In order to make informed decisions, the user of analytical results must have confidence in the data generated by laboratories carrying out testing, measurement or calibration. Using an accredited laboratory can help establish and assure this confidence.

When a laboratory becomes accredited by an internationally recognized accreditation body, it will have demonstrated a prescribed level of technical competence to perform specific types of testing activities which will be recognizable worldwide. The result is assurance that the laboratory is capable of producing data that is accurate, traceable and reproducible.

The World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) specifically recognizes that conformity assessment systems are central to improving the efficiency of production and the conduct of international trade. The WTO trade rules explicitly cover laboratory accreditation activities. Laboratory accreditation is governed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Laboratory accreditation programs are intended to achieve a level of quality assurance which will yield data that are both accurate and precise through a quality management system that complies with the ISO/IEC 17025 standard.

Accredited laboratories are evaluated against an international standard that is used throughout the world, ISO/IEC 17025 “General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories”. Certification indicates compliance where accreditation confirms competence. Specialist technical assessors, or internal auditors in a laboratory, conduct evaluations of a laboratory’s practices, staff and equipment that impact on the production of quality assured test data. This webinar will assist laboratory staff to appreciate the quality system in which they are working (ISO/IEC 17025 clause 4.1.5 (k)).

The level of quality assurance needed to achieve defined data quality objectives has a direct bearing upon the cost of the measurement techniques used. In broad terms, the levels of quality assurance fall into categories such as -

  • Field screening procedures;
  • Lab based analyses with calibrations, blanks, precision, accuracy, method detection limits (MDLs);
  • Litigation proof lab data;
  • Validation of non-standard methods.

Regulatory pressure is the driving force behind a rapid increase in the demand for laboratory services. Because the demand is growing so quickly, there has not been time for managers requiring laboratory services to learn what to ask for, what to look for, and what to avoid. As a consequence, the lab industry has moved off-center towards a commodity-based business. To the laboratory customer concerned mainly with the bottom line, the lowest bid is often assumed to be the best. This makes the daring assumption that all things are equal between laboratories and that the analytical data represent nothing more than a number for a dollar.
