Event Description

Know the Differences and Similarities of Photoshop and Illustrator

Have you ever opened Illustrator, clicked a few tools, got confused and then got too overwhelmed to ever want to go back? Do you need to use Illustrator but don't know where to start? If you're familiar with Photoshop but new to Illustrator, you already have half your work done; because being familiar with Adobe products can help you quickly learn Illustrator. You’ll get up to speed faster when you know which of your existing Photoshop skills will translate to Illustrator and which will fall spectacularly in the transition.

Join Helen Bradley in this 60-minute audio session to learn the basics of using Illustrator from the perspective of being a Photoshop user. In this presentation you will learn:

  • The fundamental differences between Photoshop and Illustrator
  • How to create a new Illustrator document
  • How strokes and fills work
  • How to draw objects from simple shapes
  • How to use the Pathfinder palette
  • How to select and reshape an object
  • Why objects sometimes need to be expanded
  • How to recolor objects quickly
  • Why you should use Layers in Illustrator even though you don't have to
  • How to work with bitmap images in Illustrator

By the end of this session you will:

  • Know the difference between vector and bitmap images
  • Know how to start a new Illustrator document
  • Be able to draw a simple design from multiple shapes and recolor it
  • Know how to select and reshape an object
  • Understand why an object may need to be expanded and how to do it
  • Know how to bring a bitmap image into Illustrator
  • Be confident in being able to launch Illustrator and find your way around an existing document
  • Understand the basics of how Illustrator works and how to use it

This is a practical presentation – where you’ll see the presenter’s screen as she works through real-world examples of the kind that you might do every day. Her emphasis will be on practical everyday tasks and on techniques which work with most images, most of the time and not on specialist examples. She will refer back to Photoshop tools and techniques to show the differences and similarities between the two programs. There will be plenty of time for questions.

  • Graphic designers
